Bold Interior Paint Colors

If the time has come to repaint the inside of your house, consider going with bold interior paint colors.  If you are living in a home with all white walls, you might as well be living in the 1800s.  Back in the day that was the only color most folks could afford.  The wealthy had colored walls.  It was just something else that set the rich and the commoners apart.  Unless you are living in a rental unit that won’t allow tenants to paint the walls there is no reason you can’t have a home that is alive with color.  Using bold colors is going to give a room a new and exciting look.  By getting away from the boring, neutral colors and using bold and darker colors you add new life to a room.

Let me give you a few easy starter tips for redoing your home with bold interior paint colors:

  • One of the most dramatic colors is a deep red.  It gives the feeling of warmth, making you feel all cozy.  If you have furniture that is a light or neutral color, the dark red walls make everything stand out, instead of disappearing into the background.
  • If you are leaning more toward a bright and sunny yellow, the trick here is to have your accessories and upholstery match the color you have chosen.  Floral and geometric designs with a combination of bright colors makes a room look cheery and welcoming.
  • A dark bold interior paint colors doesn’t necessarily have to be stimulating.  The elegance of a forest green with dark mahogany or cherry wood furniture has the feel of the great outdoors when accented with contrasting colors.
  • If you are concerned that the dark colors will make a room look smaller, it really isn’t the case.  Dark to medium colors make a room look larger, especially when the trim colors are a strong color in the white family.
  • To have color in a room you don’t have paint all the walls the same, Try using a dark accent wall that is found in your furniture behind an entertainment center of bookcases.  It gives a dramatic backdrop that will showcase your favorite pieces.
  • When it comes time to make a decision on the color you will have to live with for a while, don’t rely on the those tiny paint chips, but get enough of the sample paint to color big pieces of cardboard and set them around the room, either side by side or just one at a time, and check those sample pieces in the daylight and under artificial light, because there is a world of difference in the appearance.
  • The general rule when using dark interior paint colors is “one coat is never enough.”  Some paint manufacturers advertise paint and primer in one, but I just don’t think it has the rich look of a room with two coats of paint.
  • Don’t cut cost when you’re buying the paint.  This a case of you get what you pay for.  Better quality paint looks better, is easier to apply and retains the color longer.
  • Make sure you mix your paint really well before you start.  Just because it was on the wild shaker at the paint store doesn’t mean that it’s ready to go on the wall.  With the lid securely in place, give it a minute or two of hard shaking and then after you open it, stir it real well, getting all the way to the bottom of the can where the pigment settles.
  • Last but not least, when you are painting a room with bold interior paint colors, your first coat doesn’t need to be perfect. It is the second coat that gives a smooth consistent appearance to a wall.  Absolutely, positively let the first coat dry completely and then some before applying the second coat.  You don’t get the professional look if you rush through it.
